Art in Penzance & the Newlyn School of Art

Purely Penzance has a new and expansive Arts, Music & Performance section

Taking a stroll around the streets of Penzance you soon come to realise Penzance and the area surrounding the town has a strong tradition of the arts. The fact that the south west is a Peninsula gives the area magnificent light by which to paint, due to the clean sea air and the light reflecting up off the surrounding water.

The world famous Newlyn school of art, was bought to the art communities attention in the 1880's. It was Alexander Stanhope Forbes with a picture entitled 'Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' which was shown at the Royal academy in London. Forbes later founded the Newlyn School of Paining with his wife Elizabeth in 1899.

Some notable artists from the Newlyn School include include Henry Scott Tuke, Walter Langley, Lamorna Birch, Stanhope Forbes. The Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penlee park holds the largest collection of painting from the Newlyn School.
