Since the 17th century Penzance has been the commercecapital of Penwith. Before this Marazion was the hub of activity after being crowned Britain's firstChartered Town in 1257 by King Henry III.
Historically Penwith, along with most of Cornwall's economy has come from mining, agriculture and fishing. Modern times has seen the decline of mining, but agriculture and fishing is still a large part of the local seafront and countryside. Penzance also boasts a wide variety of commercial services from legal services, shipping, dry dock facility's, finance, builders and other non shop based businesses.

If Penzance is the commercial capital, then Newlyn is the fishing capital of the entire southwest, boasting the largest fishing fleet in the south. Most of the catch is exported to Europe, but a large selection of local businesses stock and serve locally caught fish as both raw for home cooking and restaurants with a locally caught meal. The Newlyn Fish festival is the celebration held in newlyn to celebrate the local fishing & seafaring traditions.
